As parents, we want to protect our children from anything and everything, and that includes cavities. While preventing your child from getting cavities may seem inevitable, there are certain steps and tips you can follow to ensure good oral health in your children.
Water, Water, Water
If it isn’t already, water needs to be your child’s new best friend. Water is a great source for washing away any food left on the teeth after eating and for keeping the mouth moist. Water helps your child maintain a pH balance and is the best option when it comes to drinks for your child. Other drinks, including juice and soda, have a ton of sugar and even acid, which is known to help the bacteria in the mouth grow.
Stay Away From Certain Snacks
Snacks that are high in sugar, starchy, or sticky are known to get stuck on your child’s teeth throughout the day, causing bacteria to grow. Certain snacks your child should stay away from to prevent cavities are pretzels, crackers, raisins, and gummies. Instead, have your child munch on snacks that will easily dissolve in water, such as cheese, yogurt, apple slices, and nuts.
Brush Those Teeth!
As soon as your child gets his first tooth, start brushing their teeth daily with a washcloth or teething toothbrush to promote healthy gums and teeth. This will also get them used to the idea of brushing their teeth regularly. Once your child reaches three and is able to spit out toothpaste on their own, start brushing their teeth with fluoride toothpaste. Make sure to assist your child when they’re brushing their teeth to ensure they are getting the best clean.
Keep Up With Your Child’s Biannually Appointments
Gentle Family Dentistry & Implant Center recommends your child comes in for a dental checkup twice a year to receive a professional cleaning and remove any plaque and tartar build-up on the teeth. We can also use fluoride to strengthen your child’s teeth, helping reduce the amount of bacteria.
